ATKIN GIVES THOUGHTS ON BROWN & LOLOHEA

Chris Atkin has revealed the benefit he believes his fellow new signing Kevin Brown, can have on the whole of the Red Devils squad.

The 26-year-old halfback has been working alongside the 2017 World Cup Finalist for the first time, during the current preseason.

“Training with Kev’s similar to being with Danny McGuire at KR (Hull Kingston Rovers). It’s those day-to-day standards they set,” said Atkin.

“They’ve been at the top of their game because they push themselves at every opportunity.

“They work hard and having those conversations, whether it’s on the field or after sessions, on the little things and how you can improve, is great. Not only for myself, but for the whole squad.

“He spent a bit of time with Connor (Jones), giving his input on what he likes to see from a nine and I can be part of those conversations and understand it from that side as well.

“He’s come here to work hard and he’s certainly set a standard.”

The England Knights halfback also offered his thoughts on playing alongside Tui Lolohea, ahead of the Tonga international star’s return to training on Monday.

Atkin said: “Between the three of us, Watto’s assembled a good group of halfbacks and there should be competition in that position.

“When Tui comes back he’ll bring another dimension, a little bit different to me and Kev, so I’m looking forward to working with him.

“Obviously he got nominated for the Golden Boot during that international series.

“He was outstanding for Tonga and carried that form from his end to the season with Salford. When he comes back, I think it will only add more impact to the squad.

“It’s going to be difficult for teams to look at us and think we’ll be playing one way, with the three types of halfback.

“In the rest of the team, there’s so many explosive players. Watching and playing against them last year, they were outstanding, but seeing them up close in preseason, they’ve raised their level again.”

To help raise the level of the 2020 squad, Red Devils supporters can become a Squad Builder.

Atkin said: “I’ve really enjoyed coming into a new environment and testing myself with a new group of players, under a new coach.

“GB’s been great. He knows where he can push you and he’ll do it all the way.

“I’m testing myself and meeting the standards which are set. It’s going to be tough to reach the levels I want to be at, but I think there’s a lot more in me to come.

“Everyone’s mixed in really well and we’re all challenging each other.”
