Huddersfield Giants gave Salford Red Devils fans heartache on Valentine’s Day, as they scraped victory with a late penalty.

Ken Sio and Dan Sarginson both claimed tries for the hosts, with further efforts denied by the video referee.

Both sides started the game at a very high-tempo, with Salford looking the most dangerous early-on.

The hosts forced a succession of drop-outs but couldn’t capitalise, despite Sio crossing the line twice.

Both efforts were a carbon copy of each other, and both were denied by Louis Senior managing to get the Salford man into touch.

Sio’s second effort was sent to the video referee and although it was given as a try on-field, the replays showed Sio’s boot was agonisingly touching the whitewash.

This looked to have cost the Red Devils, when Adam O’Brien scored under the posts for the visitors, with Aidan Sezer converting for a 6-0 Giants lead.

However, Sio ensured he was not denied again and eventually saw his efforts count. Pauli Pauli’s dominating run gave Salford a platform on the last tackle and Sio exploited the numbers game to score.

Tui Lolohea missed the chance to level the scores and Salford went into the break 6-4 behind.

Halftime: Salford Red Devils 10-12 Huddersfield Giants

Within minutes of the restart, the hosts were ahead thanks to Dan Sarginson.

Despite being denied moments earlier, Salford regrouped and a sustained attack down the left allowed Sarginson to cross and put them 10-6 ahead, with help from a great conversion from the touch line.

This lead lasted just ten minutes however, as Louis Senior scored out wide for the visitors. Sezer missed the conversion however and the game was level at 10-10.

A poor kicking game from the visitors meant Salford were rarely challenged in defence.

With six minutes to go, Salford forced Matty English into an error, but from the resulting set, Lolohea missed a drop-goal attempt.

Kevin Brown, against his old club, was then sent to the sin-bin for the last five minutes of the game.

The man disadvantage hurt Salford when they were forced into a series of penalties, one being converted by Sezer to make it 12-10.

Ken Sio almost won it for Salford right at the death, but his kick was knocked out of play by Darnell McIntosh and the Red Devils could not assemble the scrum in time for the restart.

Salford will come away from this game feeling the result could have swung either way and with a bit more luck late on, they could have been the ones coming away with the two points.

Salford will next be in action when they host Leeds Rhinos next Saturday. Tickets can be purchased from the AJ Bell Stadium ticket office, by calling 0161 786 1570, or online HERE.
