MATCH REPORT | ST HELENS 48-8 SALFORD RED DEVILS | FRIDAY 31ST JANUARY

An impressive display from the Betfred Super League champions, saw them claim victory over Salford Red Devils in the Grand Final rematch.

Ken Sio was the Red Devils’ only try-scorer on their visit to the Totally Wicked Stadium, despite forcing the video referee to make a decision on two further occasions.

Salford opened the scoring five minutes in, when Tui Lolohea elected to kick a penalty opportunity deep in opposition territory.

St Helens decided to run when presented with the same opportunity and were able to take control with three unanswered tries before half-time. Zeb Taia and Alex Walmsley both went over from short balls, while Theo Fages found his way through with a dummy.

Rhys Williams almost got Salford on the scoreboard, as he touched down on the left in his 250th career appearance. Video-referee James Child disallowed the try for a foot in touch however, meaning three scores separated the teams at the break.

Halftime: St Helens 18-2 Salford Red Devils

Salford looked to have hit-back at the start of the second period, when Ken Sio dived in at the corner, but the video-referee ruled in the hosts’ favour once again.

Kevin Naiqama then came to the fore, scoring to ensure Saints stayed in control.

Sio was in again down the right flank soon after, and this time there was no reason to rule out his try.

Saints then replied with a flurry to increase their winning margin. Naiqama and Walmsley both added second tries to their tallies and Jack Welsby bagged a brace with two tries in the space of less than ten minutes.

Salford will next be in action when they host Toronto Wolfpack in their 2020 Betfred Super League home opener. Tickets can be purchased from the AJ Bell Stadium ticket office, by calling 0161 786 1570, or online HERE.
