Community | Salford Red Devils celebrate World Book week at St Phillip’s

Earlier this week Salford Red Devils visited local primary school St Phillip’s C of E to read to the children as part of the World Book Week.
Salford stars Rob Lui, Joey Lussick, Mark Flanagan, Ken Sio, Lee Mossop and Greg Burke were accompanied by Head Coach Ian Watson and read to age groups from Reception to Year 5. The Red Devils were promoting reading at a young age and the importance of having male role models to the next generation.
The lads read books on a range of topics from dinosaurs to grandparents with Greg Burke getting through three books and Rob Lui staying behind to continue reading to his class who loved the ‘Star Man’s’ entertainment.
Head Coach, Ian Watson, said: “It’s fantastic to have the lads out in the community and doing activities with youngsters such as reading to them as part of World Book Week.
“We’ve got a great group of players at the moment who are more than willing to put themselves out into the community of Salford and promote fantastic initiatives such as this.
“It is important that children are reading from a young age and having positive male role models showing them that reading is enjoyable and beneficial can only help promote that in and around Salford.”

Salford Red Devils Fan Fit App has huge impact on supporters

A Salford Red Devils fan has lost over three stone in weight in just a few months thanks to our new fitness app designed for sports fans and now he’s looking to tackle the London marathon.
Fan Fit is a project from the University of Salford which allows apps to be created for organisations such as sports clubs. The app contains club information, social media feeds, records walking and running to allow fans to create a friendly competition with prizes up for grabs. Salford Red Devils Rugby League Club were the first club to sign-up to be partners for the app and our fans have been competing with each other for the past few months, offering up some incredible results.
Salford Red Devils fan Russell Chesters won himself a 2019 Season Ticket via the December competition after amounting almost one million steps and losing weight as a result.
Russell Chesters said: “I was trying to get fitter anyway, then I heard about the app. It has really helped with getting me motivated. I’ve lost close to three stone since I signed up and I did just short of a million steps in a month. I’m really competitive so it has really helped me to get motivated as the competition element really helps me.
“Every fan should have it. I’m doing the London marathon later this year and this app is helping me get ready for it.”
Fellow fan Dean Midgely won the January competition after losing half-a-stone.
Dean Midgely said: “I wanted to get fit and I’m very competitive, so I thought let’s go for it. It’s really worked for me.”
In total – since the app launched – over 600 fans have downloaded and signed up totalling around 200 million steps in total. The North West, as a whole, recently came near the bottom of the league tables for health and fitness; with rates of heart disease and stroke among the highest in the country. Sports clubs in the region believe they could be doing more to combat this, as a duty of care to their fans and Fan Fit could play a huge part in that.
Dr Alex Fenton, project lead of Fan Fit, from the University of Salford Business School, said: “It’s been received really well by Salford Red Devils fans so far and it makes me really proud that a University project has made a difference to people’s lives in this way, hearing all these stories just makes it worthwhile. We will learn from this and keep improving the app to make it even more engaging and getting fans to think a bit more about their fitness.”
As well as the fitness tracker, step leagues and digital badges, the app provides video, social and news feeds so fans can keep in touch with the latest club news while keeping fit at the same time.
Director of Rugby and Operations, Ian Blease, said: “It is great that so many fans have signed up this app and are doing such a huge amount of exercise. Congratulations to all the winners so far. A lot of fans from all clubs and sports just come to matches, maybe after being in the pub, and watch athletes run around the pitch without doing any exercise themselves.
“At Salford Red Devils, we want to try to change that and this could be one great way of doing just that. If we can get more fans to become more active thanks to this app then it will be worthwhile.”
Salford Red Devils are encouraging our fans to get involved. All that is needed is a smartphone, either Android or iOS.
You can download Salford Red Devils Fan Fit now on Android or iPhone by clicking HERE.
Any other Club that wants to sign-up to Fan Fit and help their supporters shed a few pounds should contact Dr Alex Fenton at a.fenton@salford.ac.uk.

Talking Points | Salford Red Devils 4-26 St Helens

Salford Red Devils fell to a 4-26 defeat at the hands of St Helens on Thursday evening and there were a number of talking points from the game.

Attitude

While the result wasn’t the one the Red Devils were looking for the performance was certainly a positive one as Salford put up a resilient display full of ‘effort and endeavour’ as Watson referenced in his post-match press conference.
The first half saw a real back-and-forth affair for the first twenty minutes before Saints opened up a lead heading into the break. However, much like large periods of the first half, Salford matched the current Super League leaders for most of the second half but just couldn’t open up the St Helens defence.

Salford’s defence remained strong for long spells of the game in comparison with their last home outing against Leeds Rhinos. If there were two moments that encapsulated the ‘never-say-die’ attitude they were certainly Ken Sio and Niall Evalds hunting down Tommy Makinson as he broke free and Jackson Hastings pulling off a sensational defensive effort on Makinson also as he went to score in the corner.
There is no doubting that if the levels of effort and desire remain the same next week in France that Salford will be confident of coming away from the Stade Gilbert Brutus with two points.

Injuries

It was a tough evening at the office for the Red Devils and that showed in the warm-up as George Griffin had to pull out of the starting line-up with a hamstring problem and was replaced by Daniel Murray.
The injury woes continued for Salford in the early stages as Captain Lee Mossop had to leave the field after just five minutes with a similar injury meaning Salford had to play a huge period of the game with 16 men.

Greg Burke also had to leave the field with for a concussion assessment which meant Gil Dudson returned to the pitch almost immediately after coming off to the interchange bench. Jackson Hastings also missed the final ten minutes of the game as he also needed to undergo a concussion assessment. The game may well have gone a different way had Salford had some better luck with injuries on the night.
Lee Mossop and George Griffin are both being monitored ahead of this weekend’s game against Catalans while Greg Burke and Jackson Hastings will also be looking to be in contention to make the 19-man squad.

Jansin Turgut

The acquisition of Jansin Turgut last season and his re-signing in the off-season may be one that had slipped under the radar with the other incomings however the Turkish international has put in some sterling performances thus far in the 2019 Betfred Super League.
Turgut was named as the Man of the Match by match sponsor Middleton Barton Group. The back-rower managed to earn an impressive 100 metres during Thursday evening’s game and also racked up a fantastic 44 defensive efforts. He was also prevented his first Red Devils try by a matter of inches in the first half.
The 22-year-old is definitely making an impression at the AJ Bell Stadium during his first full month of game time and he will be looking to carry his fine form into March and onwards.

Gameday shenanigans

Ahead of kick-off, special guests Jackson Yamba and his ten-year-old son David brought the matchball onto the field to an absolutely amazing reception and the Salford Red Devils fans displayed the true meaning of the Salford community!
Half-time of yesterday’s game saw the debut of ‘Wild Thang’s Wild Five Minutes’ with Dr Devil firing t-shirts into the crowd thanks to our brand-new t-shirt cannon with one lucky fan winning a golden ticket for a fabulous prize at our next home game.

Thursday’s game also saw the Salford University Takeover Day with a number of students, staff and alumni attending in both a professional capacity in the press area and as supporters. There was also a heavy Salford University presence in and around the AJ Bell Stadium as a major step between one our main partners for 2019.

Match Report | Salford Red Devils 4-26 St Helens

Despite a valiant effort, Salford Red Devils fell to a 4-26 defeat to St Helens at the AJ Bell Stadium in their fifth fixture of the 2019 Betfred Super League season.
Although the 22-point margin may suggest otherwise, the game was a hard-fought affair however the current table-toppers came out on top thanks to a double from James Roby and tries from Mark Percival, Jonny Lomax and Regan Grace. Derrell Olpherts crossed for Salford’s only try of the game.
The evening didn’t get off to a great start for the Red Devils as they lost George Griffin in the warm-up and he was subsequently replaced by Daniel Murray. However, the struggles continued five minutes into the game as Lee Mossop left the field with a similar injury leaving Salford down to 16 men for the remainder of the game.
Jansin Turgut went close for Salford in the early stages but was stopped just short of the line. But it was St Helens who opened the scoring just before the midpoint of the first half as Percival climbed highest for a cross-field kick. Lachlan Coote converted.
Injury issues continued for Salford as Greg Burke had to leave the field for a concussion assessment with Gil Dudson returning after just a few minutes on the interchange bench. The visitors would soon score again as Lomax managed to force his way over from close-range.
On the half-time hooter, Roby managed to burrow his way under the Salford defence. Coote converted to further the lead going into the break.
Following an immense cover tackle from Jackson Hastings, Salford would grab the first try after the interval as Olpherts rose highest to claim a cross-field kick and get the Red Devils on the scoreboard.
St Helens immediately replied, however. Dominique Peyroux was denied by video referee Rob Hicks but from the following scrum as the ball went wide to Grace to go over in the corner. The Red Devils continued to push but couldn’t cross again and it was Saints who finished the scoring as Roby grabbed his second of the game five minutes from time.
