Burke – “It’s somewhere we can go and express ourselves”

Salford Red Devils forward Greg Burke believes tomorrow’s Dacia Magic Weekend opener against Castleford Tigers at St James’ Park, provides the perfect tonic to put on a display for the travelling fans.

Burke, who has shared the armband with Kevin Brown over recent weeks since Lee Mossop’s retirement, has revealed that the mood in the camp this week has been positive, as the Red Devils look to build on their Bank Holiday bruising over Hull FC, in Newcastle tomorrow afternoon.

Burke said: “It’s a showcase for the Super League and we have spoken about that this week, about how it’s somewhere we can go and express ourselves.

“All the games are on Sky and we want to put in a good performance first and foremost for ourselves, but also for the fans and the viewers watching.”

Recently surpassing 200 career appearances, Burke has been a Salford player for two years now, excluding his loan spell in 2018, helping the side reach the 2019 Betfred Super League Grand Final in his first season as a permanent Red Devil, and the Betfred Challenge Cup Final last year.

Salford’s number 16 is one of the more senior players in the camp and has stepped up since Moose’s retirement.

Speaking on captaining the club recently, Burke said: “It’s been a massive honour to be seen as a leader.

“To be asked to be captain, I was happy to accept that. I’ve been really happy to be honest.”

Burke revealed that the team have been fully focused on tomorrow’s opponents, who will be fielding an almost full strength side in Newcastle, compared to the last Tigers side that were on the receiving end of a 70-18 thrashing at the hands of Marshall’s men in July.

Speaking on Castleford, Burke added: “It’ll be a massively different challenge this week. It’s a Cas team that are at the best strength they can be.

“We know we have to be on this week to give ourselves a chance, and that’s what we’ve spoke about.”

Salford Red Devils Announce VX3 Partnership

Salford Red Devils are pleased to announce a new two-year partnership with British sportswear brand VX3, in a club record kit supply deal.

As part of the partnership, VX3 will takeover the club’s retail operations and will launch a bespoke online retail experience later this year.

The partnership was struck on the back of the most extensive kit supply process that the club has conducted, involving almost thirty brands from the sports wear industry. The process was highly competitive, with VX3 impressing throughout.

To kick off the partnership, VX3 will be supplying this year’s Dacia Magic Weekend kit and purchases of this kit will be made possible soon on a microsite added to the existing VX3 website, with the bespoke retail site launching in line with the 2022 kit release.

Speaking about the new partnership, Commercial Director George Harborne stated: “I am delighted to welcome VX3 as our new kit supplier and retail partner on the back of an exceptionally competitive tender process.

“VX3 were a front runner in that process from our first conversation, and as we continued to progress discussions it became clear that they would be a great partner for the club.

“The partnership will see retail now include child and toddler kits from 2022, as well as women’s sizes across some of the range from this coming Dacia Magic Weekend, both of which were a priority for us to get right when securing a new partner.

“We are excited by the bespoke kit designs that the team have pulled together for 2022, and look forward to working with Ben and the rest of the team over the next 2 years to deliver some great merchandise for the fans.”

Ben Lovell, Director at VX3, added: “We are thrilled to be working with Salford Red Devils for the next 2 years, and on this year’s Magic Weekend kit.

“Early on in our discussions with George, we identified a number of areas that we felt we could enhance the retail offering and we look forward to developing and delivering on that over the next two years.

“Rugby league is an important sport to us, and we are pleased to add a Super League side in Salford Red Devils to our list of elite partners.”

Red Devils to face Hull Kingston Rovers at Magic Weekend

Rugby League will return to Anfield Stadium for the second time in six months next May when the Dacia Magic Weekend hits Merseyside and Salford Red Devils will clash with Hull Kingston Rovers.
Liverpool FC’s iconic stadium provided the perfect setting for England’s memorable Second Test win against New Zealand last week, and now all 12 Betfred Super League clubs can relish the prospect of playing in front of The Kop after today’s meeting of the Super League board ratified the move.
Super League broke new ground in 2007 when the Magic Weekend was established, with a regular round of fixtures taken to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
Since then it has also been staged at Murrayfield, Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, and for the last four years St James’s Park in Newcastle – and the concept has now been adopted in the Southern Hemisphere by the National Rugby League, who will stage a full round of matches at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium next May.
The 2018 Dacia Magic Weekend attracted an aggregate attendance of more than 64,000, and as ever the players relished the top of the ground conditions with a feast of tries, and an average of more than 50 points scored in each of the six games.
The fixtures at the 2019 Dacia Magic Weekend will include a repeat of the 2018 Betfred Super League Grand Final, with champions Wigan Warriors facing Warrington Wolves in the last of the three games on Saturday May 25 (1900 kick-off) – giving the Wolves the opportunity to take revenge not only for their defeat at Old Trafford last month, but also for the 38-10 drubbing inflicted by Wigan in Newcastle last May.
The Anfield programme has been determined by ranking position from the 2018 season, meaning that the other two teams who earned places in the top four – St Helens and Castleford Tigers – will clash in another mouth-watering fixture to round off the weekend on Sunday May 26 (1800).
Wakefield Trinity and Catalans Dragons will share the honour of playing the first Dacia Magic Weekend fixture at Anfield Stadium at 1400 on the Saturday, and their match will be followed by Hull FC versus Huddersfield Giants at 1630 – before Wigan and Warrington take centre stage.
The Sunday programme begins with Salford Red Devils facing Hull Kingston Rovers (1300), while newly-promoted London Broncos have been handed a tough match against Leeds Rhinos (1530) in their first Magic Weekend appearance since 2014.
All six matches will be shown live on Sky Sports, as part of their extensive, exclusive live coverage of the Betfred Super League.
Robert Elstone, the Super League chief executive, said: “On behalf of the Super League clubs, we’re delighted to be taking the Dacia Magic Weekend to one of the most famous stadiums in the world.
“Anfield and Liverpool Football Club have embraced our sport – throughout all our discussions on the Magic Weekend, they made it very clear to us that they wanted that relationship to continue. The game should be proud that Anfield has become a rugby league venue.
“I would also like to thank Mayor Joe Anderson for his support for what will be a great weekend for Super League and the City of Liverpool. I had the privilege of working in the city for more than a decade and I know Super League fans will have a great time not only at Anfield but in one of our country’s most vibrant and exciting cities. The place is special – it’s a perfect fit for the celebratory atmosphere of Magic.
“I’d also like to thank the City of Newcastle and Newcastle United for hosting the Magic Weekend so well over the past four seasons. They’ve created so many great memories for Super League and our fans, and have set the bar very high for Liverpool. Newcastle has inked its place into Super League history.”
Tickets for the 2019 Dacia Magic Weekend will go on sale on Monday 19 November 2018 via rugby-league.com and the Super League clubs.
