Factfile | Salford Red Devils vs Hull Kingston Rovers | Friday 23rd February

Ahead of tomorrow’s Betfred Super League tie with Hull Kingston Rovers at the AJ Bell Stadium we take a look at the facts behind this fixture.
Both sides have had their fair share of results over the other in recent seasons however Salford come into this weekend’s game on the back of two consecutive victories against the Robins.
The Red Devils overcame their opponents in the 5th round of the 2017 Ladbrokes Challenge Cup after coming back from a 14-0 deficit to win 24-14 a game which you can read more about here.
The last time the sides met in a league fixture (of sorts) was back in the 2016 Million Pound game when Ian Watson’s side again came from behind with a miraculous late comeback which was sealed with a mammoth Gareth O’Brien drop-goal in extra-time.
But, KR did win on their last visit to the AJ Bell Stadium in Super League coming away with a 12-29 victory over the Red Devils. Tries from James Greenwood, Josh Mantellato, Thomas Minns and Ken Sio were too much for Salford who crossed twice through O’Brien and Mason Caton-Brown.
Overall in Super League, Salford have won seven of the fixtures while Hull KR have won ten with the sides drawing on one occasion.
Salford Red Devils captain Lee Mossop – should he play – will earn his 200th career appearance.
Mossop has appeared for a host of clubs including Wigan Warriors, Paramatta Eels, Workington Town, Huddersfield Giants and Barrow Raiders before arriving at the AJ Bell Stadium. The Cumbrian forward has also represented England and the England Knights.
Red Devils 2017 top try-scorer Niall Evalds – should he play – will earn his 100th career appearance.
The versatile back has racked up an impressive 91 appearances for Salford alongside dual-registration appearances for hometown Club Halifax RLFC as well as Barrow Raiders and Oldham RLFC.
Evalds has also scored in each of Salford’s last three competitive fixtures and will be looking to make it four from four against a side whom he crossed against twice in the Million Pound Game.
Played for both
Salford centre Kris Welham was a mainstay at KCOM Craven Park playing for the Robins for ten seasons and scoring over 100 tries. Welham has continued to score regularly for Salford including scoring in both Betfred Super League games so far in 2018.
There are a handful of former Salford players in Tim Sheens’ squad including winger Justin Carney. Jordan Walne also joined the Robins directly from Salford this off-season while Tommy Lee, Connor Williams and Lee Jewitt have all played at the AJ Bell Stadium.

Flashback | Salford Red Devils 24-14 Hull Kingston Rovers

In this week’s Flashback piece we take a look back to the last meeting between Salford Red Devils and Hull Kingston Rovers as Ian Watson’s men progressed to the quarter-finals of the 2017 Ladbrokes Challenge Cup.
Despite the visitors racing into a 14-0 lead Salford managed to fightback scoring 24 unanswered points at the AJ Bell Stadium to move on to the last eight of the competition.
Hooker Shaun Lunt crossed for two tries in quick succession alongside two conversions plus a penalty goal from Jamie Ellis opened up an early lead for the Robins.
However, Salford soon hit back as Ryan Lannon narrowed the gap just prior to the interval as he latched onto a clever kick from Michael Dobson.
And it was the Red Devils who came back out on the front foot as – in similar fashion to KR in the first half – they grabbed two tries in a short period.
Prop-forward Craig Kopczak powered his way over before Kriss Brining managed to edge the hosts ahead for the first time in the game.
Ben Murdoch-Masila crashed over for Salford’s fourth of the evening to pull victory even closer which was furthered by Michael Dobson retaining his 100% record with the boot.
Salford Red Devils Head Coach, Ian Watson, said: “At half-time, we just spoke honestly as a group.
“We knew the standards they were reaching in the first half didn’t measure up to what we expect. We allowed Hull KR to dictate the speed of the game.
“We also spoke about us being soft in defence. They were dominating the ruck and getting up too quickly. We had to stop that and fortunately for us we did.”

Ian Watson names 19-man squad for visit of Hull KR

Salford Red Devils Head Coach Ian Watson has made just two changes to his 19-man squad to face Hull Kingston Rovers in Round Three of the Betfred Super League.
Mark Flanagan and Greg Johnson come into the squad for George Griffin and Derrell Olpherts.
Ben Nakubuwai retains his place in the squad following an impressive debut at Wakefield Trinity a fortnight ago. Logan Tomkins is also named after returning from injury against Trinity.
Here is the squad in full:
