Mark Flanagan – “I think we need to start well again”

Salford Red Devils team captain Mark Flanagan attended the 2018 Super League launch yesterday at the John Smith’s Stadium.
The loose-forward spoke to Rugby AM about Salford’s ambitions for the upcoming season and hopes the side can achieve something special this year.
Flanagan, sponsored by Sparta Lightning Services, said: “It’s been tough training.
“We’ve been doing a lot of wrestling and a lot of defence so hopefully we should start off with a good defensive record.
“We’ve got some new recruits Jack Littlejohn and Ben Nakubuwai from Australia and Luke Burgess has returned to the Club and he’s been training really well.
“Some new faces and some old faces as well who are ready to go and just hoping for the season to start tomorrow to be honest because it has been a long cold pre-season.”
“I think we need to start well again.
“If we can replicate we’ll be in a good position I think you need a bit of luck we were unlucky with injuries last year we lost a lot of key personnel at the same time.
“I think it’s just kicking on to the next level we were in a good position to do well and win some silverware last year probably fell down at the last hurdle but we’ll gain from the experience.
“I think the lads will be better prepared this season and there’s no reason why we can’t really do something special this year.”
Flanagan missed the last third of the 2017 season with a shoulder injury and is aiming to get a full season under his belt with the Red Devils this time around.
Flanagan said: “Off the field keep being happy and keep smiling and on the field just keep playing hopefully stay injury free and lets do something special and maybe win something get to a final and really kick on from last year.”

Warrington Wolves vs Salford Red Devils – Preview

Salford are set to face Warrington in their second pre-season friendly before the beginning of the 2018 Betfred Super League season.
The Red Devils head to the Halliwell Jones Stadium (3pm kick-off) looking to make it two wins from two in pre-season.
Match Preview
This weekend’s match will make it two derby matches in quick succession for the Red Devils after beating Swinton last weekend.
Last season was a difficult one for Warrington who finished in the bottom four and had to fight their way through The Qualifiers to secure Super League rugby for another season. However, new coach Steve Price has arrived at the Club and has been very active in his transfer activity which many feel will make Wire a serious threat in Super League in 2018.
Salford managed to do the double over Warrington last season earning a narrow victory at the AJ Bell Stadium before a memorable 38-12 victory at the Halliwell Jones Stadium at the backend of May marked seven consecutive wins for Ian Watson’s men.
Last Time Out
It was a comfortable victory for Ian Watson’s men in their first game of the year as they ran out 50-12 winners over local rivals Swinton at the AJ Bell Stadium. Greg Johnson, Tyrone McCarthy, Kris Welham, Niall Evalds, Gareth O’Brien, Derrell Olpherts, Robert Lui and Gavin Bennion all getting in on the act in a nine-try performance.
Warrington head into the game on the back of a pre-season victory over Rochdale Hornets at the Crown Oil Arena last weekend. The Wolves earned a hard-fought 10-24 victory over Rochdale but did have a number of regular first teamers absent from the side. Luis Johnson, Harvey Livett, George King and Taylor Prell grabbed the visitors tries.
Previous Meetings
As mentioned, Salford managed to win back-to-back games against Warrington in 2017 however it hasn’t always been plain sailing against the Wolves. Before last season the Red Devils suffered nine straight defeats against Warrington.
The Red Devils have only won two of their last eleven visits to Warrington however they have won their most recent as well as a memorable win in 2011 which you can read about here.
Head-to-Head
This week’s head-to-head sees one of our new additions take on a former Salford forward as we pit Ben Nakubuwai against Ben Murdoch-Masila. Both men had terrific World Cup campaigns both reaching the semi-finals with Fiji and Tonga, respectively.
Both forwards are dangerous in the opposition third and can power their way over the line on the back of a short ball and we could see a real battle between the two Bens this weekend.
Team News
Ian Watson will be running with a similar squad to last weekend’s fixture against Swinton. Kriss Brining, who didn’t feature last weekend, will again miss out as a precaution however Luke Burgess is set to make his first appearance since returning to the AJ Bell Stadium. Ryan Lannon is serving his second game of a three-match suspension.
Former Red Devil Ben Murdoch-Masila could feature in his first game for Warrington following a successful World Cup campaign with Tonga. Ryan Atkins, Kevin Brown and Chris Hill all come into the squad but Ben Westwood isn’t named.

Ian Watson names his squad for pre-season friendly at Warrington

Salford Red Devils Head Coach Ian Watson has named his squad for the upcoming pre-season friendly against Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Saturday.
Luke Burgess is set to play his first game back in the red of Salford after missing the 50-12 victory over Swinton Lions last weekend with a minor knock.
Kriss Brining, who was named in last week’s squad but didn’t feature, will miss the game this weekend as a precaution. Ryan Lannon will also miss the game as he serves the second match of a three-game suspension.
Robert Lui is set to start the game alongside Gareth O’Brien in the halves while Jack Littlejohn moves down to the bench. Derrell Olpherts and Manu Vatuvei will start on the wings in place of Greg Johnson and Jake Bibby with the latter moving into the centres.
Watson has picked the same five-man forward pack as he did for last week’s comfortable victory over Swinton however fully expect all 25 men named in the squad to feature at some point.
Here is the squad in full:

Levy Nzoungou – “I’ve been learning a lot”

Following Salford Red Devils’ 50-12 victory over Swinton Lions in our opening pre-season friendly of 2018 new signing Levy Nzoungou gave us his thoughts on the game.
Nzoungou, who is available for sponsorship, said: “The game went really well.”
He added: “I was happy with what I did on the field think I can work on a few things in attack but my defence was pretty good.
“I’ve still got a few things to work on like my fitness if I want to carry on getting a regular place in the team throughout the season.
“I’m really enjoying training and I was excited to play against Swinton and then the fans were great on Sunday which made it even better and a little easier.”
The former St Helens, Melbourne Storm and Toulouse Olympique forward admits as a youngster he is still learning but the environment at Salford is perfect for doing so.
Nzoungou said: “I’ve been learning a lot since I came to Salford and I’ve been learning loads from the guys in the middle like Mark Flanagan, Craig Kopczak and Luke Burgess throughout pre-season.
“The little stuff like throwing good passes and running clever lines it’s all helping me grow as a player and I’m sure it’ll continue.”
The Red Devils face Warrington Wolves in their second pre-season friendly of 2018 on Saturday and the French prop-forward is looking forward to it.
Nzoungou said: “I’m really excited to face Warrington next weekend I’m going to work hard in training to make sure I earn a place in the side.
“It’s going to be one of the big games as we are facing a Super League side and Warrington are a strong outfit.”

Jack Littlejohn – “I’ve only heard good things about the Club”

Yesterday the Red Devils confirmed the signing of half-back Jack Littejohn and the Australian has given his initial thoughts on signing for Salford.
Littlejohn, who arrives on Monday morning, said: “I’m really looking forward to getting started and meeting everyone around the place. I’ve only heard good things about the Club and the fans so I can’t wait.
“I know a little bit about Super League. I love my footy on TV back home so I’ll watch it when I can I’ve see a few games and I have a couple of mates who play over here so it’s always good to watch them.
“Obviously, I played a bit with Lama Tasi at the Sydney Roosters and also played alongside big Luke Burgess at Manly in 2015 so it’ll be good to see a few familiar faces when I arrive.
“I think I was ready for a change and excited about starting a new challenge so what bigger challenge is there than moving to the other side of the world to play footy.
“Like I said I can’t wait to get started with Salford and meet the all my teammates, the staff and the fans.”

Ian Watson – “A young half mentored by Andrew Johns”

Earlier today the Salford Red Devils confirmed the signing of Australian half-back Jack Littlejohn on a two-year deal.
Salford Red Devils Head Coach Ian Watson feels Littlejohn will strengthen his squad even further following the signings of Manu Vatuvei, Tyrone McCarthy, Gavin Bennion, Derrell Olpherts, Levy Nzoungou and Luke Burgess.
Salford Red Devils Head Coach, Ian Watson, said: “The signing of Jack brings another leader into the group which can only make us stronger.”
“Jack has got fantastic leadership skills and the players who have played alongside Jack say he’s a good talker and a great organiser. He’s a young half who was mentored by Andrew Johns at Manly.
“He’s a quality addition on the back of the signing of Luke Burgess because their experience in the NRL alone will add to our youthful squad. Jack is coming here on the back of his best season in the NRL in which he featured in 15 games.
“When he was half-back alongside Mitchell Moses at Wests Tigers they won some big games including against the North Queensland Cowboys.
“Jack will fit into our team first environment here at Salford because of his work ethic. He’s a brilliant trainer, works extremely hard off the ball and does a lot for his teammates which is something we promote.
“The addition of Jack gives us genuine competition for a position in the halves. We’re bringing Jack in at the right age and now is the time for him to come and try to nail down a regular place. He’s a hungry player who wants to make a career for himself by coming to the Super League and impressing.
“Hopefully it should be easy for him to settle having played at Sydney Roosters with Lama Tasi and at Manly with Luke Burgess where Jack sat behind a quality half in Daly Cherry-Evans much like Rob Lui did at North Queensland and we know what a good signing he’s been for the Club.”

Salford Red Devils re-sign Luke Burgess

Salford Red Devils can confirm the signing of Luke Burgess for the 2018 season.
Burgess, who had a stint with the Red Devils during the 2016 qualifiers campaign, re-joins the Club as Ian Watson’s sixth acquisition ahead of next season.
The prop-forward spent the 2017 season with French side Catalans Dragons after making eight appearances for Salford at the backend of the 2016 season.
Burgess began his career with the Leeds Rhinos before enjoying spells with both South Sydney Rabbitohs and Manly Sea Eagles where he racked up a total of 70 NRL games. Burgess has won the Super League with the Rhinos as well as playing for 2014 NRL winners South Sydney.
Watson said: “We’re delighted to bring Luke back to the Club. He’s going to be another big signing for us going forward.
“I’ve been keeping tabs on him since Luke impressed in his spell with us at the end of 2016 and bringing him back is massive for us.
“Luke’s performance in the Million Pound Game stands out as his attitude to get a quick play-the-ball created our first try and enabled us to be able to shift the point of attack.
“In the second half when we were low on numbers he played big minutes and when there were tough carries to be taken Luke always turned up and his desire in defence was first class.
“He gives us even more size and power to our already solid pack and he adds a lot of experience which will help the younger lads in the squad.”
Salford Red Devils CEO, Ian Blease, said: “Luke is a great player and there is no doubt he’ll strengthen our squad next season.
“He was an excellent leader for us in his previous stint with the Club and I’m looking forward to watching him get back out on the field with the Salford Red Devils shirt on.
“We’re delighted to have got this deal over the line and we are close to sealing another couple of players. Our squad is taking shape ahead of next season and is already looking strong.”
