Super 8s Round-Up – Round Six

The Salford Red Devils hopes of a top four finish came to an end after a 44-2 defeat against Leeds at Headingley on Friday night.
Gareth O’Brien kicked an early penalty goal to give the Red Devils the lead but the Rhinos led at half-time thanks to tries from Liam Sutcliffe, Danny McGuire and Tom Briscoe. Adam Cuthbertson, Anthony Mullally and a Matt Parcell double extended Leeds’ lead in the second half. The Rhinos were already guaranteed a home semi-final prior to kick-off.
Hull confirmed their place in the Super League semi-finals with a narrow victory over Wakefield in a game which was again a story of inches for Trinity who fell to their second late defeat in as many weeks. Make Fonua, Marc Sneyd and a farewell try from Gareth Ellis had given FC a lead with Joe Arundal and Jacob Miller going over for Trinity.
Sneyd’s drop-goal extended Hull’s lead to seven points but a try from Mason Caton-Brown pulled Trinity back within touching distance. Liam Finn had an opportunity to snatch a draw for Trinity however he skewed his drop-goal attempt wide of the posts.
Wigan’s top four hopes took a knock as they fell to a 38-20 defeat against league leaders Castleford at the DW Stadium. Debuting youngster Jake Trueman scored a 17-minute hat-trick for the visitors while Greg Eden, Michael Shenton and a Greg Minikin double sealed victory for Daryl Powell’s side. Tom Davies, Sam Tomkins and Thomas Leuluai scored for the Warriors.
St Helens earned a comfortable victory over Huddersfield in their search for a top four spot as Jonny Lomax crossed twice in a 40-16 win at the Totally Wicked Stadium. Regan Grace, Mark Percival, Ben Barba, Ryan Morgan and Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook all went over in a dominant win. Oliver Roberts and Ryan Hinchcliffe both scored their second in as many games for Huddersfield however it was another defeat for Rick Stone’s side.

New Road – Phase Two

As the new road outside the AJ Bell Stadium nears completion we are now moving into phase two which does mean fans attending our game against St Helens will have to adjust their journeys accordingly.
The contraflow will now switch from the eastbound carriageway to the westbound carriageway between Barley Farm Junction and the Barton Aerodrome Junction. Single lane traffic will apply in both directions.
Traffic turning left out of Stadium Way to head westbound will be required to follow a diversion route through Peel Green to Junction 11 which will then direct traffic back on the A57 westbound.
It is important that fans prepare for delays and remember to plan their journeys to the AJ Bell Stadium and travels before the Saints game accordingly. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Any questions or queries regarding these works should be directed to enquiries@hochtief.co.uk

Super 8s Round-Up – Round Five

Salford Red Devils kept their hopes of a top four finish alive as they earned their first Super 8s victory with a dominant 52-14 victory over Huddersfield.
Ian Watson’s men raced into a 30-o lead inside the opening 35 minutes. Kris Welham crossed twice while Tyrone McCarthy, Manu Vatuvei and Niall Evalds also crossed. Jermaine McGillvary did score in the closing stages of the half but it didn’t slow the Red Devils down after the break.
Vatuvei notched his second of the afternoon with the hosts first attacking set after the interval. Jake Bibby, Ben Murdoch-Masila and Josh Jones helped the Red Devils reach the half century mark. Oliver Roberts and Ryan Hinchcliffe scored for the Giants but Rick Stone’s men were never in the contest.
The victory means Salford now sit three points behind Wigan in 3rd and Hull FC in 4th. Wakefield and St Helens still currently sit above the Red Devils with Watson’s side set to host St Helens on Thursday 21st September.
Wigan Warriors climbed into the top four at the expense of Wakefield and also jumped above Hull FC with their 22-30 victory over the Black and Whites. Liam Watts was dismissed for an elbow on Michael McIlorum in a first half which saw Mahe Fonua and Oliver Gildart cross for either side. Fonua scored a second with Sika Manu and Marc Sneyd also going over but tries from Tom Davies, John Bateman and a second from Anthony Gelling boosted Wigan’s top four ambitions.
It was a disappointing weekend for Wakefield who slipped out of the top four with a late Jonny Lomax try moving St Helens within two points of the top four. Bill Tupou scored twice either side of Louis McCarthy-Scarsbrooks try but Saints fought back through Theo Fages and Lomax’s dramatic late try. Mark Percival’s conversion sealed a narrow yet important win.
Meanwhile runaway leaders Castleford Tigers extended the gap at the top of the Super League Super 8s table with a 38-24 win over Leeds Rhinos. Ben Roberts grabbed a brace alongside tries from Greg Eden, Jake Webster and Alex Foster in a splendid first half display. Kallum Watkins had given Brian McDermott’s side the lead before Cas’ five unanswered tries.
Jamie Jones-Buchanan’s early second half try was cancelled out by Greg Minkin before Matt Parcell and Mitch Garbutt tried to ignite a Rhinos comeback but Castleford held on and now lead the chasing pack by 12 points.
